West Los Angeles College’s Drug and Alcohol Studies was first started in the Spring of 2001 and as of March 13, 2007, we have a complete 36 unit program approved by the California Community Colleges State Chancellor’s Office. When completed, the WLAC student will be able to earn a certificate or an AA degree in alcohol and drug studies and be qualified to take the written exam offered by CAADE. ClassesAll classes in the Drug and Alcohol Studies program are certified and accredited by the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE). Each class meets for a total of three hours each week (except for fieldwork classes) and is available during regular semester scheduling. Day and evening classes are available. Some of the courses offered by the Drug and Alcohol Studies program may be used as an elective for an AA degree in Psychology or some may be used as General Education AA electives. Where To Go After WLACAfter completion of the WLAC Drug and Alcohol Studies Program, the student has several options available. First, studies toward a four-year degree can be continued at many of the local colleges and universities. WLAC students may also move into the world of employment as a drug and alcohol counselor with many of the local government agencies, schools and commercial businesses. Finally, WLAC students may use the education garnered from the coursework and move into other counselor-type settings including marriage and family counseling, etc. What it CostsThe enrollment fee for California residents is $20 per unit with additional fees for health ($8.00 for Winter Sessions and $11.00 for Spring Sessions) and a $1.00 student representation fee. Please refer to the current catalog in the section labeled, “Financial Aid” or visit the Financial Aid Office for assistance in determining eligibility for Enrollment Fee Waiver Assistance. Other ServicesWLAC has a host of on campus organizations, library services and a Transfer Center to assist you during your time with us. The library offers complete reference services, Information Competency Workshops and an Internet Research Lab. On campus clubs include both professional and social organizations. The WLAC Transfer Center is available to those students who are either transferring into WLAC or those who plan to transfer on to a four year university.
